Inland vs Outland Spousal Sponsorship Canada — What's the Difference?
Common-Law Partner Sponsorship
Canada
If you have been living with your partner for at least 12 consecutive months, you may be eligible to sponsor them for Canadian Permanent Residence as a common-law partner. Unlike spousal sponsorship, common-law sponsorship requires proof that you have cohabited continuously. This means documenting shared leases, joint bills, and financial records.
You can apply whether your partner is inside Canada (inland) or outside Canada (outland). Our CICC-licensed, regulated canadian immigration consultants (RCICs) specialize in common-law sponsorship applications and can help you build a strong, complete file the first time.
Common-Law Sponsorship Requirements:
To qualify for common-law partner sponsorship in Canada, you must meet the following:
You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
(not alien or visa holder)
You and your partner have lived together for 12 and/or more consecutive months
You can provide evidence of cohabitation such as a joint lease, shared bank accounts, or utility bills
You meet IRCC's financial sponsorship requirements with updated guidelines
The application process involves:
01
Application Forms
Completing the sponsor and applicant forms
02
Evidence
Gathering relationship and cohabitation proof
03
IRCC Submission
Submitting to IRCC through the inland or outland stream
04
Exam & Last Steps
Biometrics and medical exams for your partner
Mistakes or missing documents are the number one reason for delays and refusals. Our office, The Way Immigration, reviews every file before submission to make sure nothing is missed.
Conjugal Partner Sponsorship Canada
Conjugal partner sponsorship is for couples who have been in a genuine, exclusive relationship for at least one year but cannot live together or marry due to circumstances beyond their control. This may include immigration barriers, laws in the home country, or a marital status that prevents divorce.
This is the most complex of the three sponsorship streams and requires strong documentation proving:
- A genuine, marriage-like relationship of 12 or more months
- Why cohabitation or marriage was not possible
- Evidence of ongoing communication, visits, and financial support
Conjugal partner applications face higher scrutiny from IRCC. A single missing document or a weak explanation can result in a refusal. Having an experienced and trusted RCIC can only guide your application significantly improves your chances of approval. We have more than 18+ years of experience in handling exclusive conjugal partner sponsorship applications with absolute zero refusals.
